An Elementary Textbook of Ayurveda: Medicine With a Six Thousand Year Old Tradition
Published in Paperback by Psychosocial Press (March, 2001)
Author: Frank John, MD Ninivaggi
Average review score:

I'm so please someone finally wrote this book!
Finally, a book on Ayurveda that's firmly and delightfully grounded in history, theory, and practice. Dr. Ninivaggi's book is a fascinating and satisfying read and one of the few books on Ayurveda I've found that has really helped me to study the subject in depth. This is the book for all who want more than a sprinkling of fun facts and a few home remedies. I'd recommend this especially to those who have a background in science and Western medicine, but no-one who tries it will be disappointed.

Well written, concise, wonderful!
Ayurveda is a difficult subject at best. It has not recieved nearly as much attention as other Complementary Medical systems like TCM. So when a book comes along that is concise, thought-provoking, and well...exciting, on the subject it is certainly worth noting. An Elementary Textbook of Ayurveda is such a book! This is THE book on Ayurveda that I will recommend to all interested in this incredably healing Modality, and Dr. Ninivaggi deserves a lot of credit for putting out a work that is so easy to read, and yet has such a depth of information and insight. I have found myself consulting it again, and again. And each time I find in its pages some new way of thinking about Ayurveda. If you are a lay person with an interest in Ayurveda for yourself or your family, I recommend An Elementary Textbook of Ayurveda. It is easy to read, and yet thorough and informative. If you are a Practioner, either as a MD interested in Ayurveda, or a Practioner of a Complementary Modality interested in incorporating Ayurveda into your practice, I still highly recommend this book, because Dr. Ninivaggi will give you new insights into Ayurveda that it would be hard to find anywhere else. Keep this book in your office or practice space, share it with with your patients or clients. An Elementary Textbook of Ayurveda is that good!

Elijah at the Wedding Feast and Other Tales: Stories of the Human Spirit
Published in Paperback by ACTA Publications (October, 1999)
Author: John Shea
Average review score:

Stories of the Spirit
John Shea can make the stories in the Bible come alive like no other. The sory of The Woman at the Well has been an inspiration to me. I read this story to whoever I can and whenever I can. John Shea was the author I read most to my Youth Group. I thank God his style was introduced to me.

Thought-provoking and uplifting stories of the spirit
Another wonderful book from John Shea. As in "The Legend of the Bells..." Shea has collected stories from various religious traditions and from everyday life; the stories are all short and simple, yet each contains a wonderful seed of wisdom and insight. Better yet, after each story Shea offers his reflections, insights and feelings, which serve to illuminate and inspire futher. A perfect book for spiritual growth, quiet reflection, and the sheer joy of hearing and sharing the stories of others.

Elijah, a Man Like Us
Published in Paperback by Discovery House Pub (May, 1998)
Author: David Roper
Average review score:

Really want to be Like Elijah?
The title says it. A man like us. He had his failings. But he went to God.

If you have failed at one time, have nearly given up or just plan quit, get this, read it, see what God is saying to you. Then get up and do it. This book will let you see that Elijah was great before God. But it will show you that you can be if you desire it.

Everyone can be an Elijah...
We live in a world where everyday Satan is bound and determined to undermine who we are in Christ. Before reading this book, I held the Biblical heroes such as Elijah, Moses, Paul, Deborah, etc. on a pedestal but now I see them as only men and women who allowed themselves to be used by God. When Elijah had such an awesome victory on Mount Carmel, he was just a man who let it go to his head. Jezebel did not repent and still wanted Elijah dead. The depression that overtook Elijah spoke to me greatly. How can someone like Elijah be depressed? Because he and all those in the Bible are human just like you and me but they were willing when God called to be instruments surrendered to His work and will. So, keep the faith while you are still on this earth until He comes. To quote the author, "There is no situation too difficult. There is no fear that cannot be dispelled. There is no opponent that cannot be quelled. God is there with you in that place; you are on holy ground." I am comforted to be reminded once again that God is a Personal God desiring intimacy with me and you. You will definitely be blessed by this book!

Elizabeth Bacon Custer: And the Making of a Myth
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (January, 2003)
Author: Shirley A. Leckie
Average review score:

Leckie does not judge Libby by modern standards
This is a beautifully written book, and very readable. Having read a lot about the history of the period I already knew how fiercely the widow Custer guarded her husband's reputation and how much she did to enhance it. Unlike many female authors might do, however, Leckie does not judge Libby by modern standards, but puts her in the context of her time. She also touches on the possibility that remaining Autie's widow may have been far more liberating for her, in her times, than it would have been to become Mrs. Someone else. During her husband's lifetime she lived in his shadow, but after his death she was able to use that connection to become an author and lecturer in her own right. She also left an estate valued at over $300,000, after her husband had managed only to put them into debt. Having read her memoirs like Boots and Saddles and Tenting on the Plains, it was clear that Mrs.Custer never gave much insite into her true feelings. Nothing seemed to upset her except a criticism of her husband. Inspite of this, though, Leckie does manage to make her into a real person. I found her epilogue truly moving, and I came away with an understanding of an historical character, whom up to this point, I hadn't much cared for.

.

Every Custer enthusiast and admirer should read this one
Sometimes, it's not how good you are, but how good your P.R. is that determines your reputation. And in the case of the (in)famous U.S. cavalry commander George Armstrong Custer, the P.R. was definitely good. Immediately after Custer's death (along with 200+ of his troops in what was, and arguably still is, the worst battle loss ever suffered by U.S. forces), his widow, Libbie Bacon Custer, began a propaganda campaign designed to secure her beloved husband's place in history. Unfortunately for history, she succeeded far too well. This book, a biography of Custer's widow, gives real insight into how she manipulated the media available to her in order to glorify her husband--or to be more accurate, to glorify her idealized portrait of her husband. Had Libbie not done her work so well, Custer would have been only a footnote in American History. In addition to providing a valuable supplement to the historical record concerning Custer, Ms. Leckie's book paints a masterly portrait of an exceptional woman, which is well worth the time of readers with little interest in Custer

Enjoying Gods Beauty
Published in Paperback by Liturgical Press (March, 1999)
Author: John J. Navone
Average review score:

A beautiful wisdom of a beautiful truth of beauty!
The most comprehensive work I've ever read in my life that gets into the very depth of human introspection about the wonder and splendor of reality is in John Navone's scholarly masterpiece! His use of the Sacred Scriptures and human experience is impeccably reflected in his original thinking that beauty is indeed the ground of life's meaning and triumph. Navone's mind is beautiful and everyone must read this book to believe it!

God is happiness itself
The origin and ground and destiny of all human life is happiness itself. We live for happiness. This book shows how beauty is the indispensable guide and light to happiness.

There is no human achievement or excellence that has not been motivated by the inspiration of beauty in one form or another.

Within all the joy-giving experiences of beauty we know something of Happiness itself, or God.

God is happiness itself.

This book is great; and it makes me happy! It made me see how God is Beauty and Happiness itself. Wonderful.

ExTension: The 20-Minute-a-Day, Yoga-Based Program to Relax, Release & Rejuvenate the Average Stressed-Out Over-35-Year-Old- Body
Published in Paperback by Fireside (April, 1994)
Authors: Sam Dworkis and Peg Moline
Average review score:

Great Book
I read this book after delving into "home yoga" for about 3 months. As is probably common, I was doing many of the poses only semi-correctly. There is a lot of reading to be done here, but there is incredible detail to help anyone elicit the poses correctly. Dworkis also divides each pose for beginner, moderate, and advanced. After a particularly tough day of running and 5 sets of tennis, I followed the poses and felt refreshed, relaxed, and loose afterwards. The workout is also really only 20 minutes (after learning the poses) and fun to complete as well as challenging when striving for a more advanced level.

As an exercise physiologist certified fitness instructor...
As an exercise physiologist and certified group fitness instructor/personal trainer I highly recommend this book. I have been hesitant to try yoga because of the contraindicated moves (called poses), however this book makes the necessary modifications so that the program is safe, yet still effective and fun. I have looked at many yoga books, and even more videos and classes and this is my favorite. I actually recorded (audio) myself reading some of the descriptions of the poses so that I could do the entire sequence with someone to "cue" me with the appropriate instructions!

Far from Home: Families of the Westward Journey
Published in Paperback by Bison Bks Corp (September, 2002)
Authors: Lillian Schlissel, Byrd Gibbens, and Elizabeth Hampsten
Average review score:

True tales of survival
Far From Home: Families Of The Westward Journey consists of four essays by Lillian Schlissel (Professor Emerita of English and American Studies, Brooklyn College, CUNY), Byrd Gibbens (Professor of English, University of New Mexico, Valencia Campus), and Elizabeth Hampsten (Professor of English, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks) about the troubles and difficulties of individual frontier families in the latter half of the 1800s. Hardships, conflicts, and true tales of survival and what life on the fringe could cost fill the pages of these candid, insightful, scholarly, informative accounts into what it really was like to pack up and move West. Far From Home is a highly recommended addition to academic American Western Frontier Studies reference collections and reading lists.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE IN THIS BOOK!
YOU'LL LAUGH, CRY AND FIND YOURSELF IN THE PAGES OF THIS HUMAN HISTORY ABOUT THREE FAMILIES SEEKING A BETTER LIFE IN "WEST" OF THE 1840'S-EARLY 1900'S. YOU WILL SHARE THEIR HARDSHIPS, DISCOURAGEMENT AND TRIUMPHS, BUT MOST OF ALL, YOU'LL FIND OUT WHAT DREAMS, HOME AND FAMILY ARE REALLY ABOUT.

MY FAVORITE FAMILY, THE MALICKS IN OREGON TERRITORY IN 1840'S, COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO ANYONE OF US. I WATCHED AS THEY SUFFERED UNEXPECTED DEATHS AND HARDSHIPS. I SHARED THEIR MOMENTS OF JOY WHEN LAND AND LABORS PROVIDED THEM WITH ABUNDANCE, AND FAMILY TIES MATTERED MOST.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR A "GOOD READ" IN HUMAN HISTORY AT ITS BEST. I LIKED IT SO MUCH THAT I MAY READ IT AGAIN.

The Female Ancestors of Christ
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (September, 1993)
Author: Ann Belford Ulanov
Average review score:

The Importance of ReFraming One's Story
In,The Female Ancestors of Christ, Dr. Ulanov not only explores the Biblical stories of the lives of Tamar, Rehab, Ruth, Bethsheba, and Mary but she brings to life their importance in the 'making' of the Christ. She shows how each woman played her part in the heritage of the Christ and she reframes their marginal status in their respective societies and shows how this status made them the perfect vessels for the bloodline of Christ. Dr. Ulanov shows how taking what appears to be a negative characterlogical piece in one's life and looking at it through different eyes can turn that negative into a positive. Dr. Ulanov does not assume her reader is familiar with the First Testament as she recounts each story for the reader. She, however, recounts the stories in such a manner that it is easy to see what features of each woman she is going to weave into the character of the Christ. This is a moving and powerful book that I believe can assist anyone in reframing their own life story in a manner which will aid in wholeness and healing. It would be especially helpful to those in healing professions to read as it will give them a practical tool for helping them assist their clients in making new meaning out of their life stories.

Interesting, unusual depth view of the feminine
I enjoyed this book very much. Although it is written from the viewpoint of depth psychology, it is very readable and accessible (and brief). The sexual information may be surprising to those who have only received traditional bible training. Very relevant for those with a Christian heritage, whether they are practicing Christians or not.

Field Guide to Old-Growth Forests: Exploring Ancient Forest Ecosystems from California to the Pacific Northwest
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (March, 2000)
Author: Larry Eifert
Average review score:

Brings the magic alive
This slim volume is fascinating, easy to read and beautifully illustrated. While it is not a thorough scientific treaty on the subject and doesn't provide information on the locations of ALL old growth (something I kind of expected from the title) it is nevertheless an exquisite introduction.
Having contacted Larry Eifert about the book I have to also say that he and wife Nancy are extremely friendly and helpful, not only pointing me in the direction of other information and advising on the best places to visit but also sending me further of his works gratis! In particular, a wonderful little chart describing the creatures and plants of the Redwoods which was the perfect suppliment to the Field Guide.

Outstanding contribution to forestry & ecological studies.
Field Guide to Old Growth Forests isn't a scientific treatise on old growth forests, but a guide to accessing and appreciating them, blending a science guide with a travel handbook. A review of the natural history of old growth forests blends with the author's pen and ink drawings and tips on where to find the remaining old growth forests.
